The Inspiron 1545 is a very old laptop at this point in time. It was introduced sometime in the 2008–09 time frame, right at the end of the era of the Core 2-series of Intel processors. These were offered at a very competitive price point and sold like hotcakes, both to consumers and to businesses. Even today, almost a decade later, you can easily find Inspiron 1545 machines on the secondary market, and there is also a big demand for replacement parts for them.

Whether or not you should upgrade the CPU and RAM in one that you own at this late stage of the game depends. The 1545 had a lot of design compromises to meet the price point that it did in 2009, including the use of a glossy all-plastic case that picks up fingerprints and smudges like nobody’s business, a glacially slow spinning hard drive, and often, CPU’s from Intel’s bargain bin.

The good thing about the 1545 is that basically everything on it is upgradeable. You can run up to 8 GB of RAM in it, using two 4 GB DDR2–800 SODIMM’s. You can install any mobile Core 2 Duo of 35W TDP or less, all the way up to the mighty (for its time) Core 2 Duo T9900 at 3.06 GHz. The HDD can be replaced with a modern SATA solid-state drive (SSD), and even the wifi card can be switched out with something new, because there’s no “whitelist” in the BIOS for wifi cards. You can even replace the base 768p screen with the 900p and 1080p screens that were offered by Dell as options back in the day. Or pull out the DVD/CD-RW drive and install a bay that allows for a second HDD or SSD. It will run any Windows OS from XP all the way to 10, and it will also do Linux very well. You can even hack older versions of Mac OS X on one.

About the only thing you can’t upgrade is the weak Intel GM45 video chipset; there was a rare version of the 1545 with an ATI Radeon, but even it’s pretty anemic these days. So if you plan on doing any gaming on a 1545 with a game from the last decade, you probably shouldn’t make any investment in upgrading it. Even a T9900 isn’t going to help the GM45 perform much better.

However, if this isn’t on your agenda, a 1545 can actually be a competitive with a new low-end laptop, even today. The modern descendant of the Inspiron 1545 is called the Inspiron 15 3567. It comes with the same 15″ screen and an Intel Celeron N3060 CPU. And this CPU is a dog: Intel Celeron N3060 @ 1.60GHz. It’s actually one-third slower than the Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4400 that shipped in a lot of 1545’s: Intel Pentium T4400 @ 2.20GHz. And replacing that T4400 can be done in 10 minutes with a screwdriver and some thermal paste. Drop in a T9900 and you get this: Intel Core2 Duo T9900 @ 3.06GHz. That’s still a far cry from modern i7 territory, but it’s not terribly far off even the i3–6006U offered in some of the better configurations from Dell: Intel Core i3-6006U @ 2.00GHz. That CPU beats the T9900 handily in multicore apps, but can only tie it in single-core. And costs over $300 in a new laptop, while a T9900 can be scored for $35-40 on the right day.

I’ve worked with several Inspiron 1545’s over the years and done basically every trick you can do on one. I’m typing this answer up on one that’s been tricked out every which way—it’s had a better CPU, screen, SSD, and wifi card installed, along with the extra drive bay module, and dual-boots Linux and Windows. Take a look:

You can actually get a 1545 in nice condition on the secondary market for $50 or less in the USA these days. That’s where this one came from. I gave the one I had away and bought another one, because I’m so comfortable using one and decided I wanted another. I swapped in a compatible 900p screen and an SSD I already had, and bought an E8435 CPU (the Mac version of the T9900, but usable in a PC) for $25, and I was good to go. But I wouldn’t recommend this if you have to start from scratch. If you already have the 1545 and don’t need better 3D graphics capabilities, it might be worth doing, although I would begin with installing an SSD if you haven’t already.
